Four days after I came home from the hospital with my newborn daughter Hazel, I was still trying to figure out how to stand without feeling exhausted. My mother was helping me recover, making meals, washing bottles, and keeping the house running while I learned how to care for a baby.

Then my mother-in-law Constance called.

She didn’t ask how I was feeling.

She told me she needed me at her anniversary luncheon the next afternoon.

“There will be around thirty people,” she said. “You can arrange the place cards, refill drinks, help with the buffet, and stay afterward to clean the kitchen.”

I thought I had misunderstood her.

“Constance, I came home from the hospital four days ago.”

“And you’re home now,” she answered. “You’ll be sitting most of the time anyway.”
