PART 2: THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
For three days, I contacted all the families I had worked for before joining the Whitaker family. Most didn’t remember me. Two politely explained that they had no openings. On the third night, I sat at the kitchen table without touching my dinner. Danny had gone to bed early, sensing the worry I was trying to hide. The photograph captured the last light of sunset, reminding me of the afternoon Mr. Whitaker had given it to me.
“Keep this, Marta, so you’ll always remember this house.”
The phone rang. I let it ring three times before answering.
“Hello?”
“Is this Marta?”
“Yeah.”
“My name is Nathaniel. I represented Mr. Whitaker. Before we continue, please be seated.”
I slumped down in a chair and stared at the photograph.
1 thought on “I cleaned the same mansion for 18 years; three days after I was fired, a lawyer called me and told me to sit down.”
