THE MILLIONAIRE CAME HOME EARLY—AND FOUND HIS MOTHER ON HER KNEES WITH HIS TWINS STRAPPED TO HER BACK
I opened the bathroom door expecting to grab a forgotten folder before my flight.
Instead, I found my sixty-seven-year-old mother on her knees behind the toilet.
My eight-month-old twins were strapped to her back.
And my wife, Veronica, was standing over her, telling her to scrub faster.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t even speak.
My mother’s hands were buried in a bucket of dirty gray water. Sweat soaked through her blouse. An old scarf held my sons against her fragile back while she scrubbed the marble floor with a worn-out sponge.
Noah was crying. Luke was kicking. My mother kept moving the sponge like everything was normal.
“What the hell is going on?” I asked.
Veronica spun around. She was perfectly dressed, the expensive anniversary watch I’d given her still on her wrist.
“Sebastian, you’re supposed to be at the airport.”
I went straight to my mother.
“Mom. Look at me.”
She tried to stand. Her legs buckled.
I caught her before she hit the floor, then carefully lifted Noah and Luke from her back. The scarf had been pulled so tight around her that the fabric had left pressure lines across her blouse.
Then I noticed what bothered me even more.
She wouldn’t look at me.
Teresa had raised me alone after my father disappeared. She worked two jobs, saved everything she could, and helped me build the life I had now. My hotel company, my properties, every comfortable thing around us had roots in sacrifices she made when nobody was watching.
This woman had never been afraid to tell me the truth.
