Part 2: A return full of questions
All the way back to the village I felt a mixture of nervousness, curiosity, and fear. Twenty years had passed since I’d last traveled that road. The landscapes were still familiar, but I was no longer the same young woman who had left with a backpack full of uncertainty.
Now I drove my own car, had built a successful company, and could offer my daughter a life I had never imagined. However, deep down, a part of me still hadn’t healed from that wound.
When I arrived at the entrance to the village, everything seemed smaller.
The square where I played as a child was still there. The bakery still had the same wooden sign, and the church continued to mark the hours with its bells.
Some people were looking at me curiously.
It was clear that few could recognize that teenager who had disappeared two decades ago.
I parked in front of the old family home.
The paint was faded, and the garden no longer looked the same. The flowers my mother had so lovingly tended had been replaced by withered bushes. Even so, that place still stirred countless memories.
I took a deep breath before knocking on the door.
A few seconds passed.
Then I heard footsteps.
The door opened slowly.
She wasn’t my mother.
Neither did my father.
A young woman of about nineteen or twenty years old appeared in front of me.
She had dark hair, light eyes, and a surprised expression that seemed to reflect the same confusion I felt.
“Can I help you?” he asked kindly.
I was speechless for a few seconds.
—I’m looking for Antonio and Elena… Do they still live here?
The young woman hesitated for a moment before answering.
—Yes… they are my grandparents.
Those two words left me completely immobile.
My grandparents?
I felt my heart begin to beat strongly.
I had never had siblings.
So…
Who was that girl?
Before I could ask another question, I heard a familiar voice from inside the house.
—Who called?
She was my mother.
When he appeared in the doorway, time seemed to stand still.
Her hair was completely white and the wrinkles reflected the passage of years, but she was still herself.
When he saw me, he put a hand to his mouth.
Her eyes began to fill with tears.
—Laura…? —he whispered almost voicelessly.
I nodded slowly.
For a few seconds neither of them was able to move.
Finally, my mother took a step towards me.
I thought he would hug me.
But he remained motionless.
As if he didn’t know if he had the right to do it.
At that moment my father appeared.
He remained a serious man, although much older.
Her expression changed completely when she recognized me.
He said absolutely nothing.
He just stood there watching me.
The silence was awkward.
It was the young woman who ended up breaking it.
—Grandma… who is she?
My mother took a deep breath.
—She is… someone very important to our family.
That answer only increased my confusion.
We went into the house.
Everything remained practically the same.
The old clock in the living room.
Family photographs.
The wooden table where we had dined so many times.
All that was missing were my photographs.
They had disappeared.
My mother made coffee while no one could find the right words.
Finally, it was I who spoke.
—Twenty years have passed.
My father lowered his gaze.
—We know.
—Why did they never try to find me?
No one answered.
The young woman watched the conversation without understanding anything at all.
“Who are you?” I asked gently.
She smiled.
—My name is Sofia.
Then he added something that surprised me again.
—My grandparents talk a lot about a daughter who left many years ago… but they never mention her name.
I looked at my parents.
-Because?
My mother started to cry.
—Because it was the biggest mistake of our lives.
Those words moved me, but they also raised new questions.
—So… why did they never come looking for me?
My father took a deep breath before answering.
—Because we thought you hated us.
I couldn’t help but smile sadly.
—I thought exactly the same thing about you.
Silence filled the room again.
Until my eyes stopped on a photograph placed on top of the living room furniture.
My parents appeared in it…
…along with Sofia.
But there was another woman too.
A woman I had never seen before.
I pointed at her.
—Who is she?
The three remained silent.
My mother started trembling.
My father closed his eyes.
And Sofia slowly lowered her head.
It was then that I realized that the photograph hid a much bigger story than I had imagined.
My mother took a breath.
—The time has come to tell you the whole truth…
A truth we had been trying to protect for twenty years.
